Return to Monkey Island so good it renames program

Thimbleweed Park Explorer now supports Return to Monkey Island and as such its been renamed to Dinky Explorer. The rationale behind this is that Dinky is the name of the engine running the 3 games it supports, Thimbleweed Park, Delores and ReMI.

A huge amount of work has gone into supporting Return to Monkey Island and very little of it was by me. The wonderful Jan Frederick  has restored my faith in open source, contributing tons of code to ensure that all file types in ReMI can be heard, viewed, decoded and dumped. He’s even added the ability to edit the functions within the main weird.dink script and create patches that others can then use. Those interested in this could begin by looking at his patch file here to enable the command line debug switches.

A new program. SCUMM Info Extractor.

I’ve released a new program: SCUMM Info Extractor. It automatically runs/parses/extracts version information from SCUMM games, both from the interpreters and the game scripts.

This tool began with a conversation with elTee, a dose of hubris and the fateful words “should be dead easy, should only take about an hour”.

DoubleFine Explorer fixes for Psychonauts 1

Many years ago when Psychonauts 1 was released I spent a lot of time reverse engineering and documenting its file formats as I made Psychonauts Explorer. Psychonauts stores most of its game data in a .pkg bundle, the audio in .isb bundles and resources for each level in .ppf ‘level pack files’.

In 2011 the game was updated and re-released on Steam and GOG. In the process the format of the level pack files changed. I added support for the other Psychonauts 1 archives to DoubleFine Explorer but I couldn’t figure out the new ppf format. No-one else could either and this meant that for many years no-one could browse the level bundles.

Now though, the excellent John Peel has reverse engineered the new format and I’ve added support for it in a new release of Double Fine Explorer.

Telltale and DoubleFine program updates

A big update today, I’m releasing new versions of 4 programs.

Double Fine Explorer adds support for the .isb files in Psychonauts so it can play all music/speech/sfx and fixes some minor issues with the main .pkg bundle. See the readme for more information.

Telltale Music Extractor, Telltale Speech Extractor and Telltale Explorer now all support The Walking Dead Definitive Series and the wonderful Sam & Max Save the World remaster. The latter has been subject to disingenuous manufactured outrage and bogus ‘censorship’ claims from weirdos. If you’re one of those people then don’t download my software.

Monkey Island 2 Talkie Prototype

Mixnmojo has just released the fabled Monkey Island 2 talkie prototype. I delved into the game and its resource files and wrote the second page of this article about what I found.

I also made a tool to open the monster.sou file and dump the speech from the game (its linked in the article). There is lots of speech in there that doesn’t play ingame. The unexpected bonus though is that the interpreter is debug enabled and includes Windex – the SCUMM debugger. In the article I explain how to activate and use it.

McConnell Music from Super Bombad Racing

Super Bombad Racer was a Star Wars racing game released for the PS2. Normally I couldn’t care less about a Star Wars game, let alone a Star Wars racing game; but a few years ago Jake mentioned that the music is by Peter McConnell and is really good. He was absolutely right, the music sounds like Day of the Tentacle meets Star Wars and is well worth a listen.

The music for the game is contained within a file called ‘MUSICPS2.DAT’ and the audio within is in PS2 VAG format. It is possible to rip the music using a general PS2 ripper tool but that wont give the correct track names and it’ll produce different files for the left and right channels.

So to solve this I made a quick tool – Super Bombad Racing Music Extractor. It dumps the music as wav files, with the correct track names and the left and right channels interleaved together.

New version of Telltale Explorer released

I’ve just uploaded a new version of Telltale Explorer. The first in 3 years, this release adds support for all remaining Telltale games, fixes the image decoding in Batman and later games plus other minor bugfixes.

There are still some known bugs and issues so make sure you look through the readme.

Final updates to support final season

I’ve updated Telltale Music Extractor and Telltale Speech Extractor to add support for episodes 3 and 4 of The Walking Dead Season 4.

With this update they now support every Telltale game ever released, so unless there are any bugs this will probably be the final version of the tools.

The Music Extractor was first released in 2006 and the Speech Extractor a year later so that’s 13 years that I’ve been updating these tools. Together I’ve released 66 different versions so its probably well past time to stop.

DoubleFine Explorer Full Throttle Fix

Try saying that headline three times fast.

I’ve released a new version of DoubleFine Explorer to fix a problem with the images in Full Throttle Remastered. Some of the ”chnk” images were being decoded incorrectly. Many thanks to Patrik Spacek for spotting the problem and letting me know.
